Will I Have Allergies After Sinus Surgery?

Many patients claim to experience a reduction of allergies after sinus surgery. While it may appear that a patient’s allergies have gone away, what is likely the case is that the patient is experiencing an alleviation of allergy symptoms.

There are many types of sinus surgery, but the majority of them have one thing in common: sinus surgery restructures the nasal passageways. Sinus surgery does not, however, address the body’s allergic reaction to allergens.

So, will you have allergies after sinus surgery? In a word, yes. Butyou may or may not have to deal with such extreme allergy symptoms. Here are some factors that might make you contend with allergies after sinus surgery.

How often do your allergies flare up?

Do you sneeze only once in a blue moon? Or do you have the allergy forecast in Houston bookmarked on your computer and tend to check it daily (even more than the weather)? If you suffer from allergies on a consistent basis, it’s likely that you will continue to deal with allergies even after sinus surgery.

What is the severity of your allergy symptoms?

Do you consistently struggle with congestion or a runny nose? Do you get sinus headaches or post-nasal drip on a regular basis? Some sinus surgeries, such as balloon sinuplasty, have been shown to alleviate many of these symptoms. However, depending on the severity of your allergies and their symptoms, you may still struggle with your allergies after sinus surgery.

Are you receiving treatment for your allergies?

Allergy testing and treatment is a trusted and highly-successful means of reducing your allergies and allergy symptoms long-term. While sinus surgery may help reduce your allergy symptoms, if you have frequent allergy attacks, it may be in your best interest to pursue allergy shots (either before or after your sinus surgery).

A note on congestion and allergies after sinus surgery

Congestion is a known element of sinus surgery recovery. It’s not uncommon for some patients to worry that their congestion is a sign that their surgery wasn’t successful or that their allergies are flaring up. Typically, neither is the case, and normal sinus drainage commences after a few days.
