If you suffer from frequent throat infections, nasal blockage, or difficulty sleeping due to airway obstruction, it may be time to explore your options. Contact Kaplan Sinus Relief today to schedule a consultation and take the next step toward better breathing and better living.

Note: Kaplan Sinus Relief only provides tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies for patients aged 18 years and older.

What causes tonsil and adenoid issues?

Tonsils and adenoids are part of the lymphatic system and help fight infections. However, these tissues can sometimes become chronically inflamed or infected, leading to a range of issues that may interfere with daily life.

Common causes and conditions that lead to tonsil or adenoid removal include:

  • Recurrent tonsillitis
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Chronic snoring or mouth breathing
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking due to swollen tissue
  • Tonsil stones: Hard, foul-smelling deposits that form in the tonsil crevices
  • Persistent bad breath caused by trapped bacteria
  • Abscesses or other complications from untreated infections

While tonsillectomies are more commonly performed on children, some adults can experience worsening symptoms that disrupt sleep, growth, and development. In chronic tonsil issues can lead to persistent throat pain, low energy, and missed workdays.

At Kaplan Sinus Relief, we carefully assess whether surgical removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids is the right next step.

What to expect during a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) are routine outpatient procedures, often performed together when both the tonsils and adenoids are problematic. The procedures are typically quick, safe, and highly effective in resolving airway and infection-related issues.

TonsillectomyAdenoidectomy
A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, which are located at the back of the throat. An adenoidectomy removes the adenoids, which are located behind the nose, near the roof of the mouth.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 30 – 45 minutes. This procedure is also performed under general anesthesia and often takes 15 – 30 minutes.
During the surgery the mouth is gently opened with a retractor. The ENT then removes the tonsils using precision tools such as cautery or radiofrequency ablation. Bleeding is controlled, and no stitches are usually needed. The adenoids are removed using a curette, suction cautery, or other techniques that minimize bleeding and recovery time.
After both procedures, patients are monitored briefly in a recovery area before being discharged to go home the same day.

At Kaplan Sinus Relief, we prioritize minimally invasive techniques, reduced postoperative discomfort, and a smooth recovery experience. Dr. Kaplan and his team provide clear pre-op and post-op instructions to make the process as stress-free as possible.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy recovery time

Recovery varies depending on the patient’s age, overall health, and how the body responds to surgery. Most patients experience some discomfort for about 7 to 14 days.

Common post-op symptoms include:

  • Sore throat and ear pain (ear pain is referred from the throat)
  • Difficulty swallowing for the first few days
  • Fatigue and need for rest
  • Mild bleeding or blood-tinged saliva (a small amount is normal)
  • Bad breath during healing

To promote a smooth recovery:

  • Stick to soft, cool foods (popsicles, yogurt, mashed potatoes)
  • Stay hydrated with water or electrolyte drinks
  • Use pain medication as directed
  • Avoid spicy, crunchy, or hot foods until fully healed
  • Rest, but also encourage gentle movement to prevent stiffness

Most patients return to work or school within one to two weeks. Full healing of the surgical site may take a bit longer, but long-term results are typically very positive — especially when the procedure was performed to improve breathing or reduce chronic infections.

T&A surgery — FAQs

  1. Is surgery really necessary?

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are recommended when other treatments have failed. If you experience multiple infections per year, missed school or work due to illness, or disrupted sleep from blocked airways, surgery may offer lasting relief.

  1. Is tonsillectomy painful?

Discomfort after surgery is common but manageable with medications, hydration, and soft foods. At Kaplan Sinus Relief, we provide a comprehensive recovery guide and support throughout the healing process.

  1. Can adults have tonsillectomies?

Yes. While more common in children, adults also benefit from tonsil removal when chronic infections or breathing issues are present. Recovery may take slightly longer, but outcomes are just as effective.

  1. Are there risks involved?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks, including bleeding, infection, or reactions to anesthesia. However, complications are rare, and Dr. Kaplan uses modern techniques to keep risks to a minimum.

  1. Will removing tonsils or adenoids affect my immune system?

No. While tonsils and adenoids help fight infections early in life, the immune system has many layers of protection. Removing them does not make you more prone to illness.
